With the 30+ pictures on this USMBOOKS web page we have tried to give potential buyers a reasonable idea of the amazing graphic content in the four Third Reich graphics and advertising magazines we offer for sale. These Nazi magazines were intended for an international audience with parts of the texts in the German and English languages.

THE LOT INCLUDES:

the July 1936 and April 1937 issues of Die zeitgemäße Schrift (Contemporary Script), a professional magazine for Typesetting, Design and Script. The heavily illustrated 9 x 11-1/2 inch magazines were published by Verlag für Schriftkunde Heintze & Blanckertz of Berlin and Leipzig

AND

the July 1939 and March 1940 issues of the high-quality Third Reich international advertising magazine called Gebrauchsgraphik, promoting art in advertising. These heavily illustrated 9-1/4 x 12-1/4 inch magazines were published by Frenzel & Engelbrecher Gebrauchsgraphik Verlag in Berlin.

The 260+ pages in these four Nazi era magazine include interesting heavily illustrated articles and beautifully printed art, propaganda posters, script (including for the Zeppelin Hindenburg, Hitler quotations and the 1936 Olympics!), even tipped-in color art and hundreds of examples of superb advertising.

Publication of Die zeitgemäße Schrift stopped in 1943 due to the war. This lot includes issues 38 and 41, issue 64 was the last one published. Publication of Gebrauchsgraphik continued again after World War II.

The photos on this USMBOOKS web page show content from the four Third Reich German advertising art magazines we offer for sale. They are complete and have no odor and are in used - but not abused - condition. Three of these magazines have taped spines and the July 1936 issue of Die zeitgemäße Schrift has doodling on the cover and a name handwritten on the back cover.

.... contemporary German graphic designer Oskar Hadank (famous for packaging designs, labels, and trademarks), the work of Hungarian graphic designer Georg Konecsni, xylography, richly decorated Tyrolese leather belts, the work of Italian photographer Bruno Stefani and much more.
There are hundreds of color and black & white examples of posters, decorative lettering, advertising brochures, book covers, labels and packaging for items ranging from cigarettes and tobacco, soap, perfume, whiskey and wine.
Inside the front cover of the July 1939 issue of Gebrauchsgraphik is a full-page ad by Anzeigen-Aktiengesellschaft or “ALA”, the German advertising agency under the control of the Central Publishing House of the Nazi Party, Franz Eher Nachfolger GmbH, in Munich. Other advertising is by companies such Agfa, the DAF Publishing House, Pelikan, Zeiss-Ikon, IG Farben, NSV, as well as for typesetters, book printers, drawing machines and pencils, rare cameras, paint and ink producers, book and magazine publishers, etc., etc.
Subjects covered are decorative lettering used for 1936 Olympic Games posters, signage, postage stamps and ephemera, German lettering used in the German aviation and naval industry, ancient and modern writing masters, posters and certificates designed for the 4th Jugend Reichsberufswettkampf (Youth Career Competition), middle school and high school arts & craft teachers teaching italics, script and design, .....

1937 Reichsberufswettkampf der deutschen Jugend
Shown right are pictures that accompany the article about the importance of lettering used in the German aviation industry. Artist Georg Wagner is shown designing lettering for the Zeppelin Hindenburg and the first test is shown below it.

The picture below shows new and improved signage on the aiport building of Halle / Leipzig , accompanied by Nazi swastika banners.
